Election Results

I’m sitting in Queenstown New Zealand at the moment. In about an hour’s time I get to jump out of a plane at 15,000 feet. Thankfully Ive missed all the Australian Federal election coverage this week. The one thing I have been heartened by this election campaign though is individuals getting online and campaigning. That has got to be healthy for our democracy. I’m not talking about GetUp! or the EFA. As great as their work has been, they can only reflect the views of their organisations. I’m talking about the folks on Facebook, Twitter etc., who care enough to spread a message and get people thinking. Personally I don’t think it is a good idea to rely on any organisation for something that you feel personally passionate about. For me it is Liberty & an Open Internet.

For those of us that believe in those ideas, our choices in this election suck. On the one hand we have the ALP who want to censor and log everything you do online and the Liberal party want to introduce an electronic ID system for all Australians.

Quite frankly I wouldn’t mind a hung Parliament. At least it would send a message that a lot of us are very unhappy with what we have to choose from. All the best for tomorrow everyone. Now I must go and jump out of a perfectly good aircraft!
